Carlisle SynTec Inc. plans to open a thermoplastic olefin roofing membrane facility in Utah by summer 2005 to help meet growing demand.
The division of Carlisle Cos. Inc. will build the plant in Tooele, Utah, outside Salt Lake City, making it the first major roofing manufacturer with a TPO membrane plant in the West, according to the company.
Carlisle SynTec will produce its Sure-Weld-brand TPO single-ply membranes and related accessories at the 220,000-square-foot site, which will employ about 70, said Mari Killian, advertising manager.
Groundbreaking for the Tooele facility will take place in September, she said.
Carlisle also plans to open a facility for polyisocyanurate insulation products in Terrell, Texas, giving it entry into the Southwest market.
Carlisle, Pa.-based Carlisle did not disclose its projected investment for either plant.
Demand for the TPO roofing and polyisocyanurate insulation products has increased in recent years, Carlisle said. Net sales last year by Carlisle's construction materials segment increased 18.7 percent to $579.4 million, driven primarily by increased domestic sales of TPO and ethylene propylene diene monomer roofing and residential roofing tile products, according to the company's annual report.
Most recently, in the second quarter of 2004, the segment's net sales rose 21.4 percent from a year earlier to $187.5 million. North American commercial roofing sales accounted for about two-thirds of the net sales increase, the company said.
The company's Sure-Weld products have grown in popularity due to their heat-welded seams, reflectivity, weatherability and dimensional stability, according to the company. The membranes are available in white, gray and tan.
``We are very excited about the opportunity to grow internally through expansion of our construction materials and commercial roofing business,'' Richmond McKinnish, Carlisle president and chief executive officer, said in a news release.
``Construction materials has been a significant growth platform for Carlisle for many years. The allocation of capital for the construction of these facilities shows again how committed we are to this market.''
The Tooele plant will be the company's second TPO membrane facility. Its existing plant - in Senatobia, Miss. - opened in 1998 and expanded with a second production line in 2001, said Ron Head, sales and marketing manager for Carlisle Thermoplastics Group.
Carlisle SynTec also operates two EPDM roofing membrane plants, in Greenville, Ill., and Carlisle.
The Terrell plant will be Carlisle's fourth polyisocyanurate products factory, operated by its Hunter Panels division.
