Alcan plant closing will cost 74 jobs
MONTREAL - Alcan Inc. of Montreal will close a former Wheaton Inc. blow molding facility in Mays Landing, N.J., to pare costs and boost volume at other plants.
The 60,000-square-foot facility makes bottles for pharmaceutical and personal-care markets. The site will close by Oct. 3, eliminating 74 jobs, spokeswoman Marie Berard said Sept. 9. Equipment will be distributed to other blow molding facilities in the region, increasing volumes at those sites.
``We have more than one plastics packaging plant in the region,'' she said. ``This was a base situation of overcapacity.''
Gemini Plastics moving to bigger facility
FALLSINGTON, PA. - Injection molder Gemini Plastics Inc. is moving to a bigger building to accommodate growth.
The firm will more than triple its floor space by the end of the year when it moves to a 40,000-square-foot facility in Fallsington. Gemini was awarded a $700,000 loan from the Pennsylvania Industrial Development Authority to acquire and renovate the building. The private company now works out of a 12,000-square-foot operation in Fallsington.
Vice President Eric Rosen said Gemini is a diverse molder running 19 presses with clamping forces of 13-450 tons. The firm now employs 28 but expects to more than double its staff when it has room to grow at its new location.
Gemini's custom work includes consumer products, industrial components, lighting parts, point-of-purchase items and construction goods. Gemini also molds proprietary lines of literature holders, towel bars and point-of-purchase frames.
Rosen said by phone that Gemini molds a lot of polycarbonate and a range of other engineering and commodity thermoplastics. Gemini does part assembly, decoration and custom packaging.
Gemini President Alan Breece bought the company in 1998. Officials did not disclose sales.
Red Diamond purchases Allied Extruders

Most of its capital is provided by Mitsubishi International Corp., the U.S. subsidiary of trading giant Mitsubishi Corp. of Japan.
Packaging veteran Robert Isen and Allied executive Menash Oratz also invested in the acquisition. Isen is Allied's new chief executive officer and Oratz was named chief operating officer.
Ensinger UK building factory in Wales
LLANTRISANT, WALES - Ensinger UK, a supplier of engineering plastics stock shapes and semi-finished and finished components, plans to build a new plant and headquarters in Wales, creating nearly 50 jobs over three years.
After twice expanding its Llantrisant base since 1993, Ensinger UK has outgrown the site. It now plans to build a headquarters on an 8-acre site between Llantrisant and Bridgend, Wales.
Ensinger expects to move into the 56,000-square-foot office, factory and warehouse complex by August 2005, said Steve Tipples, general manager and project manager. The move, planned with financial aid from the Welsh Assembly Government, will include headquarters personnel plus 42 employees of specialist machining offshoot Ensinger Precision Engineering Ltd.
EPE makes finished and semi-finished parts from shapes made by its parent, Ensinger GmbH of Nufringen, Germany. EPE operates machining equipment and two small Engel injection presses, serving markets including medical and aerospace.
Greater space will allow the company to expand injection molding capacity, Tipples said. The new site also will include Ensinger's stock shapes distribution business.
Ensinger UK has seven sites employing more than 200.
