A pair of Northeast Ohio compounders have been honored for innovations made to their product lines.
The Noveon unit of Wickliffe, Ohio-based Lubrizol Corp. was recognized for its Estane-brand thermoplastic polyurethanes, while A. Schulman Inc. of Fairlawn, Ohio, won accolades for its Aquasol-brand specialty polymer and its Clarix-brand thermoplastic laminate.
Noveon's Estane was singled out for a Product Line Strategy Leadership Award by Frost & Sullivan, a consulting firm in Mountain View, Calif., that praised Noveon for ``well-positioned, seamless service ... in key industrial sectors around the world.''
Estane is used widely in wire and cable, fabric coating, hose and tube, and film and sheet markets. Recent research and development efforts have pushed Estane farther into melt-spun elastic spandex fibers and materials that offer enhanced breathability for garments.
Schulman received two NorTech Innovation Awards from the Cleveland-based Northeast Ohio Technology Coalition. To win, an entry has to be unique for its industry, solve a specific problem and help its company's bottom line. Schulman's AquaSol is a water-soluble polymer that uses proprietary polyvinyl alcohol technology.
Schulman's second NorTech award was for Clarix, a thermoplastic ionomer laminate that provides a durable, high-gloss finish that officials said rivals the appearance of paint.
``Clarix may be used to produce complex parts that would be difficult, if not impossible, to paint,'' said product manager Dennis Smith.
