Extrusion Dies Industries LLC will manufacture flat dies in Germany at its subsidiary EDI GmbH, the company plans to announce at K 2004.
EDI LLC, of Chippewa Falls, Wis., created EDI GmbH in Reichshof-Wehnrath, Germany, in January. EDI plans to announce its manufacturing operation there on Oct. 20, the first day of K 2004 in Dusseldorf, where it is exhibiting.
EDI GmbH employs 10 specialists in making flat dies at the 5,000-square-foot plant. Together they have a combined 72 years of industry experience.
The German plant will do machining, grinding and polishing of new dies and rework EDI dies, adapters and coextrusion feed blocks. The flat dies are used to make cast film and sheet and do extrusion coating.
Scott Smith, operations manager, said the wholly owned subsidiary in Germany should begin making dies in the fourth quarter. EDI is considering expanding the operation, he said.
EDI in Wisconsin has provided direct support from its sales, engineering and manufacturing staff and its design database. The German unit will offer die systems, technical support, spare parts and die upgrades, Smith said.
The general manager of EDI GmbH is Andreas Sannert, who has more than 20 years of experience in toolmaking. Sannert and the 10 die makers previously worked for Extrusion Dies Services in Germany, which was the agent for EDI in Europe.
``Our plan is to build dies in Germany when it makes sense from the customer's point of view, and these will typically be standard dies rather than more specialized systems,'' Sannert said.
EDI also owns a subsidiary in Leicester, England, called Extrusion Dies-UK Ltd.
The German and England subsidiaries are the first in a series of local service centers EDI is planning to support its international customers.
