Consulting group Plante & Moran PLLC will survey the automotive industry's plastics suppliers to determine how they are combating rising resin prices.
The firm will contact as many as 1,000 companies for the study, produced in conjunction with the Troy, Mich.-based Original Equipment Suppliers Association, said Jeff Mengel, a partner with Plante & Moran of Southfield.
The research will look at how molders are surviving rising costs for their raw materials and increasing customer demands to reduce prices, he said.
Mengel said he has heard of some firms trying to expand the approved list of resins to include products from lower-cost countries, substituting commodity grades for expensive, engineering-grade material and looking for opportunities to use regrind.
Results should be available in January.
