Ford Motor Co. executives asked suppliers to boost their use of recycled plastics and other materials. The automaker set a recycled-content target of 5 percent for nonmetallic materials in vehicles by 2012. At the time, about 1 percent of the weight of a Ford vehicle was recycled nonmetallics.
Manufacturers in China were busy keeping up with demand for Pokemon animated creatures used in promotions in North American fast-food restaurants. Eight Chinese injection molders and assemblers were churning out 1 million pieces a day during promotions at McDonald's Corp. and Burger King Corp.
