Injection press builder Negri Bossi SpA continues to march to an electric drummer.
The company from Cologno Monzese, Italy, has rolled out these introductions:
* A small electric press, the VE, which boasts the first injection-press use of a polymer/concrete base, already widely used in the machine tool field. The material makes the platform rigid and stiff, increasing the life of moving parts and ensuring exact parallelism of the clamping system.
* The VE 480 electric machine, which uses a new Siemens drive to generate electricity during the braking phase of the motors. That extra power is fed back into the machine, reducing energy use. Other features of the VE 480 include a split base for easier installation and a lower height than hydraulic machines of comparable size.
President Giulio Cicognani said the company has sold about 700 all-electric presses since it introduced its first in 2001. Half of all Negri Bossi machines now sold are either all-electrics or hybrids, he said.
Today, with the new VE offerings, the company makes all-electric presses in clamping forces of 77-935 tons.
Cicognani also is general manager of Negri Bossi's parent company, Sacmi Imola scrl, which supplies high-speed compression molding machines for making bottle caps. He said Sacmi expected to sell about 100 of the presses to North America last year.
The company has increased the speed of its bottle cap machines by 25 percent. It also has started making 48- and 72-cavity molds for PET preforms, in a bid to become a systems supplier to the packaging industry.
Negri Bossi USA Inc. is based in Newark, Del.
