Resin Technologies Inc., a resin-buying adviser in Forth Worth, is offering advice on colorants and additives as well.
RTI first added the service in early 2003 and now has almost a dozen customers in colorants and additives. The company handles purchases of almost 5 billion pounds of resin each year.
``We came to realize, as we were working on resin, that a lot of [clients] would ask us to buy their white [colorants] or slip [additives] as well,'' RTI Chief Operating Officer Bill Bowie said in a recent phone interview. ``We talked it over and decided we knew the players in those markets well enough to help.''
Shortly after launching the service, RTI hired Sam Beasley, a 20-year color industry veteran with plenty of operation and sales experience, to oversee the colors and additives business.
``There's a lot that goes into the composition of pigments and how they're used,'' Bowie said. ``This area still flies under the radar more than it should. It's a top-five spend [area] for a lot of processors and it's been seeing some price pressure of its own.''
Color also ``is more complicated because of the component issue,'' Bowie added.
``Red isn't just red - it has to match everything else on the chart,'' he said. ``And for automotive, there's a strict approval process. There aren't as many vanilla grades as there are in resin.''
