NDC Infrared Engineering has developed a family of rotary scanners for blown film.
The scanners can do a complete scan per minute of the film bubble, depending on bubble diameter. NDC said its equipment significantly improves the feedback time for the gauging system to generate a polar plot of the bubble profile.
The Irwindale, Calif., firm offers scanners for blown film bubbles up to nearly 9 feet in diameter.
Without the rotary scanner, the gauging system must wait for the oscillating die or haul-off to complete rotation before it gives an update. That can take several minutes, NDC said.
NDC said the rotary scanner is installed below the collapsers and above the frost line of the blown film system. The gauging system includes NDC's telescopic probe positioner to keep the sensor in the proper position to the bubble at all times.
