Lawrence Jones, 92, former chief executive officer and president of Van Dorn Co., died Oct. 15 in Louisville.
Jones earned a degree in economics at Colgate University in 1935 and in 1939 joined Van Dorn, then a supplier of metal and plastic food packaging.
In 1945, the company, then known as Van Dorn Iron Works Co., produced its first manually operated plastic injection molding press, marking the beginning of Van Dorn Plastic Machinery Co.
Jones succeeded his father as president and CEO in 1952. He retired in 1991, and in 1993 Van Dorn Co. was sold to Crown Cork and Seal Co., which then sold the plastics division to Mannesmann AG. Today the plastics machinery unit in Strongsville, Ohio, is known as Demag Plastics Group Corp.
In 1988 Jones was given an honorary doctorate by Dyke College, now Myers University in Cleveland. He lived in Shaker Heights, Ohio, for many years and was active in Cleveland-area civic projects. For more information about Jones, visit www.lcjones.com.
