Boy Machines debuts hybrid injection press
EXTON, PA. - Boy Machines Inc. of Exton has introduced two hybrid injection presses, the Boy 55Ae and the Boy 90Ae - boasting standard servo-electric screw drive and eject-on-the-fly with a hydraulic clamp and injection.
Boy said the hybrid presses offer sufficient and repeatable nozzle force, which the company claims is a problem with fully electric machines.
The standard eject-on-the-fly capability is achieved through the use of a double-pump system. Boy said this is especially efficient when molding screw caps. Last year, a 24-cavity screw cap mold for PET bottles, tested at Boy's German testing facilities on a Boy 90Ae, cut cycle time from 7.1 seconds to 6.4 seconds, for an 11 percent reduction.
It was possible to mount the large, 24-cavity closure mold on the small press because of Boy's generous tie-bar spacing.
In other news, at last fall's Fakuma trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany, Boy introduced an integrated sprue sorting system, available on new Boy 22 and Boy 35 machines, and as a retrofit.
``Without any loss of cycle time, the sprues will be separated from the molded parts,'' said Bernd Fischer, director of process engineering for parent company Dr. Boy GmbH & Co. KG of Fernthal, Germany.
He adds that the only requirement to retrofit existing Boy presses with the sprue sorter is to exchange the existing delivery chute for the new sorting system.

Demag hydraulic fluid cleans components
MIDDLEFIELD, OHIO - Demag Plastics Group says its new longer-lasting hydraulic fluid cleans internal components and may even reduce noise from injection press operation.
Demag worked with Sajar Plastics Inc. of Middlefield to test Demag Ultra Life.
Sajar officials said the fluid improved machine performance and cleaned components such as the oil tank sight gauge, ejector spool, pump check valve and clamp open valve. Tests showed several positive results, including elimination of silicone contamination and reduced oxidation, nitration and acidity.
Before coming up with its own proprietary fluid, Demag recommended certain fluid brands for its equipment.
The company claims Demag Ultra Life can last three times longer than other machine fluids.
DPG's North American headquarters is in Strongsville, Ohio.

Maplan simplifies PVC profile extruder
MCPHERSON, KAN. - American Maplan Corp. of McPherson, has developed a 92-millimeter counter-rotating extruder for vinyl profiles, using technology from its sister company, Battenfeld Extrusiontechnik GmbH of Bad Oeynhausen, Germany.
Maplan said the robust extruder is designed for simplicity and low-cost operation. ``It's for the price-conscious buyer who wants a reliable yet economical extruder,'' said Ludwig Reisinger, vice president of technical services and development.
The maximum throughput rate is 750-850 pounds an hour.
Maplan designed the extruder and assembles it in Kansas.
The screws are slightly longer than on conventional 92mm extruders, for consistent processing. Other features include water-filled screws and air-cooled barrel zones, instead of oil-cooling systems.

Battenfeld develops versatile extruder
BAD OEYNHAUSEN, GERMANY - Engineers at Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik have developed a design for the company's planetary-gear extruder that can accommodate an even wider range of applications.
The barrel is cooled by water instead of oil. The extruder also uses an electric-powered ceramic heater. That means more energy can be fed in, or taken out, within a very short time - increasing the extruder's possible applications and significantly boosting output, according to Battenfeld Extrusionstechnik.
The planetary gear unit has been completely redesigned, with improved geometry of the planetary spindles and an improved design for the barrel segments. All of the four barrel segments are now interchangeable, extending the service life of the entire machine.
Also, the spindles are shaped symmetrically, so they can be reversed one time before they have to be replaced.
Also new: a multifunction ring mounted between two barrel segments of the planetary gear unit, which allows you to insert a pressure transducer and/or temperature gauge into the gear unit. That makes it possible, for the first time, to determine the pressure and temperature inside the unit accurately.
The multifunction also can be fitted with a degassing unit.
