Japan's Sekisui Plastics Co. Ltd. is moving into North America, building a plant in Mount Pleasant, Tenn., to produce foam for the auto industry.
Osaka-based Sekisui Plastics - which is not directly related to fellow Japanese auto supplier Sekisui Chemical Co. Ltd. - announced its plans for the $6 million, 42,000-square-foot plant Feb. 20.
The facility is expected to open by fall, with 10 employees producing the proprietary Piocelan foam, made from a blend of polystyrene and polyethylene, Sekisui Plastics President Keizo Ono said in a news release. The company expects to have 25 employees by 2008.
Piocelan is used in auto interiors. Japanese automakers asked the company to expand to the United States to supply the foam for the cars they produce in North America, Ono said.
