Extrusion machinery meets new demands: Part 1 of 2

    Advances in extruders and related equipment help operators make the most of ever-faster line speeds and allow them to keep up with new demands in the marketplace.

    Addex Inc. (Booth N5571): Gauge Band Randomizer for blown film systems' patent-pending technology has been modified and improved. Also, extrusion components and complete systems.

    Allied Dies Inc. (Booth N6255): Automatic lip adjustments on flat film and sheet dies complementing new DuraFlex and reworked dies for film and sheet.

    American Extrusion Services Inc. (Booth N5728): Total extruder rebuilding and related services. New melt-exchange barrier-type feed screw for lower melt temperatures at higher output.

    American Maplan Corp. (Booth S2515): Diverse equipment for pipe, profile and sheet extrusion. AMC-92 counter-rotating twin-screw extruder for high-volume, cost-effective PVC profiles; TechBEX modular single-screw extruder for small profiles; new AMC/BEX single-screw extruders for sheet; PO 250/700 latest polyolefin pipe die; a range of screws for twin extruders; the largest-diameter high density polyethylene pipe made in the United States.

    Battenfeld Gloucester Engineering Co. (Booth S2515): FlexoElite printing press, a gearless system with 10-color capability that runs webs up to 80 inches wide at up to 1,500 feet per minute. Makes simplified sleeve changes. Also, a new servo-controlled bag-making machine for accuracy and affordability. The 75-inch-wide line can be used on- or off-line. Model to be displayed is rated at 200 cycles per minute and can make side- or bottom-seal bags. A ThermoFlex sheet system has a three-roll hydraulic stack slanted at 45 degrees and powered by independent AC solid-state drives for precise line speed control; it was designed for in-line thermoforming systems. E-Plus II process control provides intuitive operator interface and presents process data, graphics and animations in real time and historically. Also, an Opticell foam sheet die for efficient, blemish-free production. The innovative spiderless die is more efficient than conventional annular dies, making possible tighter-gauge control and no weld lines.

    Boston Matthews Inc. (Booth N5061): New Logic single-screw extruders that use direct drive for maximum power efficiency. New Smart PLC color touch-screen control system for extrusion lines.

    Brampton Engineering Inc. (Booth N5533): New, remote-controlled, battery-operated roll-handling cart with front-to-front turret winder. The cart at NPE will have wireless control, 3,000-pound capacity, a 40-inch diameter roll and a 23-inch scissor lift. Also, first public display of commercial films made with AquaFrost system, a water-quenched downward-blown technology for exceptionally clear film at high production rates.

    Breyer GmbH (Booth E10550): Thin-film technology aimed at products for optical data carriers, monitors and other uses needing exceptional thickness control and gloss on two sides. Achieved through combination of calendering and special extrusion dies. Also, a new automatic film-thickness changing system that does not rely on mechanically adjustable parts.

    Bruckner Inc. (Booth S514): Enhanced laboratory stretching unit, Karo IV, for monoaxial and biaxial film orientation; three oven modules simulate actual production conditions. Also showing an extension of Lisim pilot line to develop films serving critical markets - features machine direction orienter with multigap stretching for sequential stretching.

    Carpenter Powder Products Inc. (Booth E10303): For screws that fail from corrosion or wear, Micro-Melt 420-CV alloy has increased corrosion resistance over 440C and D2 alloys while maintaining wear resistance of Micro-Melt A11-LVC alloy and the toughness of A11 alloy.

    CDL Technology Inc. (Booth E10422): Single- and twin-screw extruders, underwater pelletizer and water ring pelletizer.

    Cincinnati Extrusion GmbH (Booth S2515): FiberexT will extrude profiles from wood-plastic composites at two demonstration runs a day at its booth. Also showing Alpha single-screw extruders for profiles; Monos 90 single-screw with 37 length-to-diameter process unit for high melt quality at low melt temperature; Konos 50 latest-generation conical twin-screw machine with wide processing window; Argos 93 parallel twin-screw with high torque and screw temperature control; Argos 173 EA jumbo extruder for PVC foam sheet and Talos single-screw that the firm said is flexible and easy to operate.

    Cincinnati Milacron Extrusion Machinery (Booth S1702): Parallel twin-screw extruders including model with 115-millimeter screws and a pipe head and die set from Midwest. TC86 conical twin-screw with a Vinyl Tech fence profile die on display. Well-suited to wood fiber-plastic composites with up to 70 percent fiber loading. High torque at low screw speed. Deliver high-output, homogeneous melt though optimal mixing at lower shear. Consistent process heating and cooling through four barrel zones.

    Also, PAK 350 single-screw extruder featuring plug-and-play installation. The 3½-inch-display machine has bimetallic barrel, chrome-plated screw, 100-horsepower direct-control drive. The rugged machine is shipped fully assembled, prewired and tested. Wide choice of components and torques. Easy maintenance and quick tool changeover.

    Specially coated replacement barrels and screws. New barrel air-cooling system. FACTS Systems microprocessor control. New Mosaic control option for extruders. Retrofit and aftermarket packages with gearbox and screw-oil manifold. Machine engineering and design display.

    CMD Corp. (Booth S755): Global draw-tape bag-making system. Small footprint, speed up to 600 feet per minute, flexible take-off options. Also, Bottomseal bag-making system has robust design, can handle range of films and features Allen-Bradley controls and servo-technology.

    Comerio Ercole SpA (Booth N4106): Calender lines and related equipment, including downstream machinery, forged rolls, winders, rubber calenders. New to North America are four-roll PVC calenders and refurbishing services to convert current four-roll machines to new units.

    Cooper Machine & Tool Co. (Booths E9249, E9252 in Canadian Pavilion): Plastic film and bag converting machinery. New easy-loading cantilever turret winder with fixed cantilever air shafts and end support. New bag machine features include self-contained, air-cooled hydraulic unit to avoid leaks and overheating. New coreless winder includes features such as counterweight dancer for better winding tension and optional automatic core system.

    Custom Downstream Systems Inc. (Booth N5581): Downstream extrusion machinery. Travel planetary saw for pipe. High-precision vacuum tank. In-line precision cut-off saw. Dual downstream system with two calibration tables, cleat haul-offs and guillotine cutters can run two products simultaneously.

    Davis-Standard LLC (Booth N5107): New seven-layer blown film system with Super-Cooled Mac extruder, low-profile die and automatic air ring. New, cost-effective DS-TPC discrete control for extrusion. New XP Express roll-stand system for sheet and packaging. New Integrator Pro for complete line control of converting processes. Also, QC laboratory line running with horizontal extruder and FPV pump. The line will be making cotton swab sticks with all-in-one Betopack machine for pulling, cutting and packing small serrated tubes. And, new, adjustable and horizontal extruders with small footprints and gearless direct drives: Super Blue 4½-inch extruder, Merritt 3½-inch extruder, Elastomeric leakage-free ELF feed section and torque motor extruder.

    Dekuma GmbH (Booth E9940): Pipe extrusion lines including extruder, screw, dies, vacuum calibrator, spray cooling tank, haul-off and planetary saw.

    Dr. Collin GmbH (Booth N5395): Specializing in laboratory and pilot plant extruders, calenders, twin-screw kneaders and roll mills. North American debut for blown film coextrusion line for research and development.

    Doteco srl (Booth N5091): New Profit and Profix auto profile control systems for blown film. Profit uses segmented disk with air passages between the die and air ring. Controlling the air passages controls cooling and gauge. Profix is based on dual-lip air ring in which the lower orifice is divided into extended air passages that control cooling and gauge. Gauge variation can be cut by as much as 50 percent.

    R. Dray Manufacturing Inc. of Texas (Booth N5599): Extrusion screws, barrels, nonreturn valves. New patented barrier-screw design.

    Entek Manufacturing Inc. (Booth S1304): New 40-millimeter twin-screw extruder featuring Henschel TGE gearbox. The E40 is self-contained with PLC controls and vacuum pumps on board and hookups in place for fast setup and operation. Also, Entek's new series of Smart Controls for extrusion lines with touch-screen operation and combining monitoring control with trending functions.

    Extrusion Control & Supply Inc. (Booth E10922): Distributes maintenance parts to the plastic extrusion industry.

    Extrusion Dies Industries LLC (Booth N4661): Flat dies for film, sheet, coating extrusion. Now offering complete component integration between extruder and downstream, such as flat die, gauge profiler, coextrusion feed block, die subsystems, melt feed pipes, vacuum box, exhaust hood, die stand and splitter. Also, for very high-layer constructions, firm can combine feed block and and multimanifold die. All new dies for cast film will be based on the Contour Die design.

    Extrusion Services Inc. (Booth N4046): Downstream extrusion equipment and tooling. In-line embossing systems. In-line palletizing/stacking systems. Lower-cost servo-flycutter/puller combination units.

    Facts Inc. (Booth N4344): Extrusion control systems for tubing and small profiles.

    Fengyuan Plastics Machinery Co. Ltd. (Booth N7245): Air bubble film machines with line speeds up to 4,000 feet per minute. Bubble film bag-making machines with speeds up to 120 pieces per minute. Extruders for original equipment manufacturers.

    Glycon Corp. (Booth N5915): New Hurricane feed screw. Plus Smartbarrel, Flitescan and other extrusion auxiliaries, such as nonreturn valves.

    GMA Machinery Enterprise Co. Ltd. (Booth E11229): Extrusion machinery components including auto die, manual T-die, screen changer, gear pump, static mixer and feed block.

    Greiner Extrusion US Inc. (Booth S791): Extrusion tooling and downstream equipment.

    Gruber & Co. Group GmbH (Booth E10464): Profile extrusion systems. Guillotines, cutoffs, haul-offs, pullers, saws, dies and tooling. Foam extrusion. Tooling for window profiles.

    Guangdong Liansu Machinery Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (Booth N8340): Pipe and PVC profile extrusion machinery. Spiral and corrugated-pipe extrusion machinery. Aluminum/plastic panel extrusion machinery.

    Hosokawa Alpine American (Booth N5555): New seven-layer barrier film extrusion line with side-fed die for fast material changes.
