Joint venture Sapona Plastics LLC of Asheboro acquired the assets of Whit Corp. of Franklinville, N.C., on June 1. Terms were not disclosed.
Sapona plans to consolidate manufacturing operations in Asheboro during August. The Whit site, about 18 miles away, makes brushes for cooking grills, household and automotive cleaning applications. As combined, Sapona Plastics will employ about 65.
Custom injection molder Sapona added a 440-ton all-electric Powerline machine from Cincinnati Milacron recently and now operates 13 presses of 110-500 tons including four all-electric units. Sapona molds products for personal-care, consumer, construction and automotive markets.
The Whit business was founded in 1920 and was under direction of the family's third generation of ownership. Whit President W. Michael Whitaker and other key Whit personnel have taken positions with Sapona Plastics.
