Auxiliary equipment manufacturer Wittmann Kunststoffgeräte GmbH of Vienna, Austria, recently bought more than 4 acres of additional land at its year-old site in Kunshan and will increase the space under roof by more than 40 percent by year's end.
Werner Wittmann, president and founder, said the extra 23,600 square feet will allow the firm to add powder coating and painting and expand warehousing. The plant is built to allow production space eventually to double again from its soon-to-be expanded size of nearly 67,000 square feet.
The 800-employee firm is on track to begin producing its Drymax PDC dryers at Kunshan early in the third quarter and to be at full output by year's end, Wittmann said at the plant April 25, the day before Chinaplas. The firm also will begin making loaders at the facility this year, he said. Wittmann currently makes robots, granulators and temperature controllers in Kunshan.
Ching said the company's target is to produce robots in China for 20 percent less than it costs to make them in Europe, though Werner Wittmann stressed that the 80-employee Kunshan plant uses all the same production machines and quality-inspection tools as its other facilities.
Wittmann described current business in the U.S. market as ``very, very good,'' even ``close to overheating.'' The company also is experiencing strong growth in most of Europe, ``except perhaps in the [United Kingdom], which is starting to rebound.''
Meantime, the company just opened a sales and service subsidiary, Wittmann Plastik Cihazlari Ltd., in Turkey, near Istanbul.
