Sweden's Trelleborg AB is moving into North America's building industry with its second acquisition of a profile extruder in less than six months.
Trelleborg announced July 7 that it is buying Kawneer Co. Inc.'s Kawneer Rubber & Plastics unit, a $12.6 million business line turning out plastic extruded profiles for construction and transportation customers.
The KRP business in Bristol, Ind., will join Trelleborg's earlier purchase of Aurora, Ohio-based EPG Inc., a profile extruder with nearly $23.8 million in annual sales.
``Together with EPG ... KRP will give us an even stronger growth platform for our operations in North America,'' said Peter Suter, president of Trelleborg Building Systems, in a news release.
Stockholm, Sweden-based Trelleborg has extensive operations in North America for its automotive, engineered systems and sealing divisions, but until this year, its building unit had no presence in the region.
Globally, the building group boasts 2.5 billion Swedish kroner ($349 million) in sales making roof membranes and seals for consumer and pipe products, but the bulk of that business is in Europe with production through both Western and Eastern Europe. The division also has operations in China.
This year's earlier purchase of EPG and now its pending acquisition of KRP - expected to be completed by Aug. 1 - establish the group in North America with more than $36 million in annual sales.
Trelleborg expects to lower production costs at its two new acquisitions by combining some overhead costs and intends to launch its products through the new sites.
``We will now have the opportunity to transfer know-how from Europe to the North American market,'' Suter said.
