Diversified manufacturer 3M Co. of St. Paul, Minn., will invest $96 million to build a resin production facility and to upgrade a plastic film manufacturing plant in Decatur, Ala.
Spokeswoman Donna Fleming would not disclose the plant's size or the type of resin it will produce. But the operation will supply 3M's optical-films business, she said July 12 by telephone. The plant is expected to be complete in March 2009.
The film line, which will be operational in October 2007, will replace old equipment at Decatur and support 3M's traffic safety systems business, according to Fleming.
The firm received a 10-year tax abatement of $232,927 per year for noneducational related taxes and $1.4 million in construction-related tax abatements on the resin production facility alone. For upgrading film capacity, the company received $32,810 per year for the life of the abatement and $198,900 on construction-related abatements.
3M expects to add 20 new jobs for the resin project. It employs a total of 450 in film production.
Meanwhile, 3M has acquired SCC Products Inc. and JJ Converting LLC, both of Sanford, N.C., as it increases its position in flexible packaging. The firms will be incorporated into 3M's Electronics Solutions business. Terms of the deals were not released.
SCC makes flexible packaging products that protect electronic devices from damage throughout production to installation. 3M officials said that static control is a growth opportunity for 3M's Electronics Solutions business. The acquisitions give that business its first major flexible packaging facility. Each firm operates its own plant in Sanford, Fleming said. JJ Converting was a supplier to SCC.
``At this time we don't have any plans to move operations, but those operations will become fully integrated into 3M Electronic Solutions,'' Fleming said.
JJ and SCC leadership will stay in place, including SCC President Michael Swartz. JJ Converting's owner is listed as John Jaran, according to the ``Lee County Manufacturing Directory.'' SCC and JJ officials had no comment.
