ECM Plastics Inc. recently expanded its custom compounding capabilities with the addition of a new extruder line in a room solely dedicated to fluoropolymers.
``We see it as a way to leverage our technology base - we have the capability and knowledge in the use of colors. We see it as a good opportunity for color masterbatches, pre-colored and specialty compounds,'' said Bob Pilotti, business development manager.
The Worcester company has no plan to launch its own fluoropolymer line, but will be a custom and toll producer, he said.
ECM installed a twin-screw Leistritz extruder developed exclusively for compounding fluoropolymers. It is digitally controlled with options for downstream feeding and liquid injection. The new area in the facility also contains a second-floor mezzanine for color-development equipment.
Pilotti said the addition also meant training a special team to operate the equipment.
The line is designed for use with fluoropolymers such as fluorinated ethylene propylene, ethylene tetrafluoroethylene, perfluoralkoxy, polyvinylidene fluoride, modified fluoroalkoxy, tetrafluoroethylene hexafluoropropylene and vinylidenefluoride and ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene resins.
He said the company can produce custom colors, add fillers and if needed, lubricants, stabilizers or antioxidants. Then, the compounds can be molded and evaluated at its in-house polymer laboratory.
Pilotti said the materials can be used in a variety of industries, but are especially suitable for wire and cable.
ECM operates in a 120,000-square-foot facility that has a rail siding and bulk-handling equipment. It is ISO 9001:2000-certified.
