Brown Machine LLC of Beaverton, Mich., announced two controllers for thermoforming machines: the Series 4.0 and Level 2.
Both are flexible, adaptable, easy to maintain and use open architecture, Brown said.
Brown offers the controllers as standard on all its CS- and SRS-brand continuous thermoformers and higher-end cut-sheet thermoforming machines. They are optional on all other Brown thermoformers and trim presses.
The 4.0 controller, which has a touch-screen monitor, uses an Allen-Bradley SLC-500 programmable logic controller. An Ormen motion controller provides servo movements and real-time timing. The controller comes with an industrial-grade personal computer, running Windows XP. Other features include Ethernet communication to secondary controllers and a modem.
The heater control on the 4.0 allows ovens to run on open loop, with a percentage timer, or closed loop using feedback from thermocouples. Temperature accuracy while running closed loop stays within plus or minus 2° F, with most types of heaters, Brown said.
The oven menu shows the actual oven's dimensions, so an operator can set up zone profiles relative to the sheet position on screen. The controller displays color-coded alarms, warnings and other types of information.
The Level 2 cut-sheet controllers include the same display, recipe storage, diagnostics and other features of the 4.0. All process parameters for platen movements, rotate and lift-table functions communicate through the PLC and variable frequency drives.
Open-loop platen systems are repeatable within plus or minus 0.03 inch. An optional closed- loop system, using Allen-Bradley's Control Logistics software, is repeatable within plus or minus 0.005 inch.
Heater controls are open loop, percentage-time controlled. Each zone can be set in 1 percent increments or a two-second time base. Brown said time-based programs allow for unlimited forming routines, which are only restricted by movement capabilities of the machine.
