Dow Chemical Co. has developed two propylene-based polymers for rigid packaging in its family of Inspire resins.
Inspire 117 Performance Polymer provides balanced strength and clarity for blow molding, according to the company. It has improved stiffness and toughness compared with clarified random copolymers, presenting opportunities for downgauging. Its clarity and high-heat deflection temperature make it well-suited for liquid foods such as syrups, fruit juice and other hot-filled products.
Inspire 404 offers clarity and stiffness in thermoforming. Dow claims clarity is similar to that of amorphous PET and general-purpose polystyrene/styrene-butadiene copolymer. The resin's higher stiffness over conventional PP allows downgauging. It is applicable to drink cups, deli containers and other disposable packaging.
