Katy Industries Inc. has divested its Contico Europe consumer products business.
Katy said Nov. 27 that it sold the business, which makes and distributes household, hardware and shelving products, to Jardin International Holding BV. Arlington, Va.-based Katy did not disclose terms of the deal.
Amir Rosenthal, Katy chief financial officer, said in a telephone interview that the divested business is based in Redruth, England, and employs about 100 in its plant and office. The Contico Europe consumer products business shares a facility in Redruth with Katy's commercial plastics business, which will continue under Katy's ownership.
``We now look forward to enhancing the value of our businesses that sell into commercial distribution and our electrical business units,'' Katy President and Chief Operating Officer Anthony Castor III said in a news release.
Rosenthal said Katy has no plan to sell its North American consumer products business. The Contico unit in Bridgeton, Mo., makes household storage, automotive, shelving and related products. The Woods Industries Inc. subsidiary in Carmel, Ind., and Woods Canada in Toronto sell consumer electrical and electronic products such as extension cords, connectors and accessories, most of which are made offshore.
Katy's commercial products business spans several brand names. Continental Manufacturing Co. of Bridgeton makes a range of plastic tools and containers for janitorial and food-service uses. Wilen in Atlanta makes professional cleaning supplies such as mops. Contico Manufacturing Ltd. in Redruth distributes cleaning supplies. Other Katy subsidiaries make cleaning compounds, abrasive pads, roof ventilation goods and industrial abrasives.
Jardin International of Hoofddorp, Netherlands, significantly expanded its European housewares stake in 2005 when it bought Newell Rubbermaid Inc.'s Curver business. The Sagol family owns both Jardin International and Israeli housewares major Keter Plastics Ltd. Keter boosted its presence in the European housewares and home improvement market with the 2003 acquisition of France's Allibert Group. Keter is based in Herzliyya, Israel.
