Ticona upgrades LCP for electronics uses
Ticona has extended the operating temperature and flow properties of its Vectra liquid-crystal polymer.
Aimed at demanding electronics applications such as connectors and lead-free surface mounts, Vectra LCP S135 has a heat-distortion temperature under load of 635° F. The Florence, Ky., firm also said the new grade has better weld-line strength and reduced viscosity to fill walls as thin as 0.008 inch.
Ticona claims the new LCP's polymer structure allows processing at temperatures lower than other high-heat LCPs. It also can be molded at tool temperatures below 200° F, allowing use of water-cooled molds for faster cycles than in oil-cooled molds.

NaturalNano creating clay-nylon composite
NaturalNano Inc. is developing specialty clay-nylon composites that promise high strength at light weight.
The West Henrietta, N.Y.-based firm said it recently completed a manufacturing-scale demonstration to make the composite it calls Pleximer.
The product is a dispersion of halloysite clay nanotubes at levels of up to 25 percent in nylon. NaturalNano claims its proprietary technology allows high loadings that normally are difficult to achieve. Pleximer is designed to be added to nylon resin to boost strength for uses in automotive, aerospace, sporting goods and other markets.
Unlike conventional nanoclays with platelike structures, halloysite nanotubes are more readily dispersed in existing molding equipment, according to the company. NaturalNano expects to launch Pleximer commercially in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Cook boosts its line of polyester gel coats
Cook Composites and Polymers Co. has expanded its lineup of unsaturated polyester gel coats for in-mold coating.
Cook Composites' new Imedget series includes three products setting new gel-coat standards, according to the Kansas City, Mo., company
The Imedget PCT100 series features rich, lasting colors with high resistance to blisters and fading and sharply improved patch and gloss recovery. The PCT600 series is a toughened coating formulation that resists cracking, yellowing, chalking, blistering and water absorption. PRT1000 products feature a toughened formulation that resists cracking and chipping during processing and in consumer use.
