Ampacet Corp. has developed high density polyethylene masterbatches that can compete with PET in glossy packaging.
The Tarrytown, N.Y., firm claims its POP high-gloss colors enhance gloss in HDPE by more than 200 percent compared with standard-colored HDPE. The new masterbatch creates opaque HDPE containers that can replace PET in personal-care, cosmetics and similar applications. Such substitution allows use of more-economical machinery and easier processing for cost savings, Ampacet said.
POP colors increase HDPE stiffness and melt strength, making the material suited to monolayer bottles and as the skin in multilayer bottles. Conventional high-gloss HDPE compounds have lacked the parison strength to make monolayer bottles, according to Ampacet.
