NaturalNano Inc. is developing specialty clay-nylon composites that promise high strength at light weight.
The West Henrietta, N.Y.-based firm said it recently completed a manufacturing-scale demonstration to make the composite it calls Pleximer. The product is a dispersion of halloysite clay nanotubes at levels of up to 25 percent in nylon. NaturalNano claims its proprietary technology allows high loadings that normally are difficult to achieve. Pleximer is designed to be added to nylon resin to boost strength for uses in automotive, aerospace, sporting goods and other markets.
Unlike conventional nanoclays with platelike structures, halloysite nanotubes are more readily dispersed in existing molding equipment, according to the company. NaturalNano expects to launch Pleximer commercially in the fourth quarter of 2007.
