Auxiliary equipment maker Maguire Products Inc. has purchased a 54,000-square-foot building - its sixth - to handle growth into larger dryers and to house production transferred from its granulator operation in Rhode Island, which has closed.
President Stephen Maguire said the company closed its U.S. Granulator Division in Smithfield, R.I., in March. Maguire Products will continue to make its three current models of granulators at the Aston building, but will no longer develop new granulators.
``We closed it down because we didn't have sufficient business, really, to maintain operations in the granulator market,'' Maguire said April 25 during an interview in Aston. ``We'll continue to make the ones we've designed, because they're unique in the market. But generally speaking, granulators are not a very profitable business.''
Maguire Products, which Maguire founded in his house in 1977, opened the Rhode Island granulator factory in the late 1980s. He said the operation was scaled back during the past year, and only employed five people when the company shut it down.
Initially, the machinery maker will use the new building for warehousing large products, like hoppers for its main product, blenders. ``We buy blender hoppers by the tractor-trailer load,'' Maguire said.
The building gives Maguire Products space to handle new sizes of dryers.
``One of the reasons we bought the new building is because we expect the expansion of our dryer offerings,'' Maguire said. The company, which now makes dryers with capacities of 30, 100 and 200 pounds of material an hour, is moving up to 1,000- and 2,500-pound dryers.
In other product news, Maguire Products is ready to start producing new gravimetric feeders. The self-calibrating color feeders correct output during production.
Five of the company's six buildings are in an industrial park near its headquarters. Stephen Maguire bought the newest building in September. He is always looking when buildings come up for sale, keeping with a business model of smaller buildings that focus on specific products.
