Borouge Pte. Ltd., based in Abu Dhabi, has launched the Gulf Plastics Pipe Academy to promote the use of plastics pipe and good installation practices in the Middle East.
GPPA is an independent and nonprofit organization representing all stakeholders in the plastic pipe chain, including resin producers, pipe and fittings makers, pipe system designers, contractors and installers, and utility providers, according to Borouge. Officials unveiled the association during Dubai Plast Pro, held April 23-25 in Dubai.
GPPA is committed to education and training programs, promoting standardization and certification and encouraging best practices in health, safety and environmental matters, a model that also has relevance in India and China, where the full benefits of plastics pipe systems have not been realized, according to Bourage.
GPPA will concentrate on the Middle East region, including Egypt, Iran, Yemen and Djibouti, and eventually will cover Pakistan and parts of Africa, said Managing Director Robert Lawrence.
GPPA aims to have 300 members, whose contributions will fund the group. GPPA currently is based at Borouge headquarters, but expects to have its own office by 2009.
