Husky Injection Molding Systems Inc., working with Nano Scale Surface Systems Inc., has introduced injection molding equipment to produce plastic medical disposables with an internal barrier coating of silicon dioxide.
The equipment makes parts with glasslike properties, providing a barrier against gas transfer and preventing a chemical reaction between fluids and the plastic parts.
Husky of Bolton, Ontario, said the plastic parts can replace many items now made of glass, including test tubes and blood vials, eliminating the risk for breakage and injury.
Husky displayed the parts at the Plastec West trade show, which was held Feb. 13-15 in Anaheim, Calif.
