Shin-Etsu Silicones of America Inc. has introduced new liquid silicones for silicone-to-plastic injection molding.
The Akron, Ohio, firm said its KE2090 and KE2095 series Select-Hesive liquid injection molding systems provide primerless adhesion to a variety of thermoplastics. While they stick to the plastic substrate, they don't adhere to metal surfaces of the mold. Suited for over-molding and coinjection, the silicones cure quickly and firmly to the plastic without any need to pretreat the plastic.
Each new silicone for liquid molding holds its bond to plastic under temperature and humidity extremes, according to Shin-Etsu. The products differ in their affinity to plastics. KE2090 sticks best to polycarbonate, polybutylene tereph¼thalate and polyphenylene oxide, while KE2095 shows more affinity to nylons and polyphthalamide. They are available in hardnesses of 30-70 Shore A.
