GE Plastics of Pittsfield, Mass., and Fiber Innovation Technology Inc. have teamed up to commercialize new fiber technology based on GE Plastics' Ultem polyetherimide in the United States.
The partners say the new fiber is well-suited to make textiles and nonwovens for applications where fire resistance is key, as in aircraft interiors. Fiber Innovation, based in Johnson City, Tenn., has capacity to make 10 million pounds per year of six-denier filament yarns and staple fibers by melt-spinning Ultem 9011 resin.
Fiber Innovation and GE Plastics also are working on smaller-denier fibers.
