Recycling machinery maker Zerma GmbH of Zuzenhausen, Germany, will open a second manufacturing facility, in Ningbo, China.
Initially the Ningbo plant, set to open in September, will assemble machines. Zerma's production plant in Shanghai manufactures the recycling equipment, including granulators, pulverizers and shredders. Zerma relocated its manufacturing operations from Germany to Shanghai in 1999.
Jane Huang, general manager of Zerma Machinery & Recycling Technology (Shanghai) Co. Ltd., said at Chinaplas, held May 21-24 in Guangzhou, that Zerma chose Ningbo for the new factory because of proximity to transportation and a major harbor. She added that 85 percent of Zerma's Chinese-made machines are exported to the U.S., Europe and Southeast Asia.
The plant will cover 75,350 square feet in the first phase and expand to 161,500 square feet next year. Huang said she expects the Ningbo site to employ about 100 by year's end. The invest totaled about $3 million.
In recent years, Zerma's Shanghai plant exported about 3,500 pieces of recycling machinery each year. That plant is located on 13 acres and employs 280.
