Bayer expands lab at Newark, Ohio, site
PITTSBURGH - Bayer MaterialScience LLC has added a design center to its color lab at its compounding plant in Newark, Ohio.
The center will allow Pittsburgh-based BMS to do additional work with customers on its Leda-brand color technology. Leda adds colorants and special effects additives in resin pellets to create a range of effects, including metallic, sparkle, shimmer, pearlescence and glow-in-the-dark.
In Newark, BMS makes compounds based on polycarbonate and PC/ABS.
Clariant offers small PPS compound lots
HOLDEN, MASS. - Clariant Masterbatches now makes compounds based on polyphenylene sulfide in lots of less than 1,000 pounds.
Processors can begin product development and pre-production phases of a project without having to buy large quantities of the material, officials with Holden-based Clariant said.
Product manager Robert Wick explained that although processors often need PPS alloyed with another material or modified with special fillers, production quantities ``may make it difficult to justify buying 1,000 pounds or more, as some other suppliers may require.''
Research firm AMI releases new report
WYOMISSING, PA. - Applied Market Information LLC has updated its ``Report on the Thermoplastics Compounding Market in NAFTA.''
The report highlights current compound demand in the North American Free Trade Agreement region and analyzes almost 500 compounding plants, including producers of color compounds and concentrates and compounds based on PVC, technical polyolefins and engineering polymers.
AMI, based in Wyomissing, estimates there are 495 compounding sites in the region, with 83 percent of those operated by independent compound and concentrate makers. Most of the remaining sites are operated by resin producers.
PolyOne adds to its colorants, additives
AVON LAKE, OHIO - PolyOne Corp. of Avon Lake recently commercialized new PicoTint-brand liquid colorants. The products are aimed at use with clear engineering resins such as polycarbonate, acrylic and styrene acrylonitrile.
