Metabolix Inc. said its joint venture has developed new grades of Mirel resins based on naturally derived polyhydroxyalkanoate.
Mirel P1001 is designed to replace styrenics in injection molding, while P1002 is aimed at replacing polyolefins such as polypropylene. Both resins can be processed easily on conventional injection molding equipment, according to the Cambridge, Mass., firm.
Metabolix also announced a new paper-coating grade from its Telles joint venture with Archer Daniels Midland Co. Mirel P2001 is an alternative to petroleum-based coatings that allows for fully biodegradable, coated paper cups and food packaging, the firm claims.
