GLS Corp.'s Suzhou-based facility, GLS Thermoplastic Alloys (Suzhou) Ltd., has ambitious plans for the second half of 2007.
Speaking at ChinaPlas 2007 in Guangzhou, director of sales and marketing Walter Ripple said the company expects the Suzhou facility ``to double capacity by year's end, expand our [research and development] facilities and add a range of new products.''
In the months leading up to the plant's first-year anniversary in June, it added a new compounding line and achieved certification under the ISO 9001, ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 standards.
With North American and European consumers increasingly concerned about the quality of products from China, the ISO 9001 quality control and ISO 14000 environmental performance certifications are a prerequisite for firms seeking to export products.
Ripple said GLS has seen big growth in thermoplastic elastomer use in medical packaging and instruments, along with growth in consumer goods and food packaging.
The 80,000-square-foot plant produces more than 40 different TPEs and recently added products for use in barriers, vibration dampening and ABS overmolding.
Ripple said the material for use in ABS overmolding is a special adaptation for the China market.
``ABS is king in China,'' he said.
Ripple added that with the increase in products, the company also plans to add R&D and technical support staff.
Privately owned GLS Corp.'s headquarters is located in McHenry, Ill.
