Tekni-Plex Inc. is laying off 57 employees in hose production at its Bucyrus, Ohio, facility.
The company told Ohio's Office of Workplace Development it lost business July 9 with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., a major long-term customer. The loss triggered a round of layoffs that were scheduled for July 27. In addition, workers temporarily laid off earlier in the month due to the seasonal slowdown will not be recalled, Tekni-Plex said.
Employees that were to lose their jobs July 27 included 12 coiling operators, six extruder operators, 12 hose inspectors and six compounders. Of the 68 workers laid off July 6, 35 were coiling operators and hose inspectors. Workers at the plant are organized under United Steelworkers of America Local 673.
Tekni-Plex sent the layoff notice in compliance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act. Tekni-Plex is headquartered in Somerville.
