Bio-based resin manufacturer Cereplast Inc. has opened its first office outside the United States - in Hong Kong - and said it plans to open a European office later this year.
The Hawthorne-based firm, which doubled the size of its small factory in the city last year, said in late July it is trying to push into global markets with its corn- and starch-based resins.
The company said it has hired Alec Pettigrew as senior vice president of international sales and marketing for Asia and Europe, to open the Hong Kong office.
The firm said in Securities and Exchange Commission filings earlier this year that demand in Asia is being driven in part by countries there mandating reductions in polystyrene food-service packaging and looking for alternative materials.
As well, the company pointed to improvements in the Asian and European composting and recycling infrastructure that are pushing demand.
