Managers of flexible packaging brand Koropak established a North American office in mid-2006 and may begin operating a West Coast warehouse soon. Long term, Koropak is looking at initiating production in the United States.
Los Angeles-based Korozo North America LLC operates Koropak. The family-owned company has operational links with Korozo Ambalaj Sanayi Ve Ticaret AS of Istanbul, Turkey, a major producer of laminated flexible packaging, with distribution in Europe, the Middle East, western Asia, North America and elsewhere.
New packaging opportunities from two privately owned firms prompted the business expansion to North America: specialty grocer Trader Joe's Co. of Monrovia, Calif., and meat, poultry and seafood processor-distributor Golden West Trading Inc. of Vernon, Calif. Its main production site is in Turkey.
Formed in 1973, Korozo Ambalaj employs about 1,500, has nine plants and exports about 60 percent of its Turkish production.
The operation's equipment includes 40 extruders with capabilities for as many as seven layers, seven lamination lines, three stretch film lines, 62 bag-making machines and 32 flexographic and rotogravure printing presses.
