Under a new business structure, performance skateboard developer Flexdex LLC of San Diego aims to broaden its distribution.
The company entered the skateboard market in August 2005 after reformulating its polymer-matrix-composite laminate to include nylon with its mix of polyester, fiberglass, glass mat and long fibers. ``Adding nylon cuts down the porosity,'' Chief Executive Officer Elliott Rabin said in an interview at Action Sports Retailer.
>From 1995 to early 2003, Flexdex operated in the skateboard market as a division of San Diego-based Ridout Plastics Co. Inc., a material distributor and custom manufacturer.
Flexdex pulled out of the business because of insurance liability issues, but subsequent legislation in California and elsewhere has identified skateboarding as a hazardous sport and provided a level of protection for manufacturers.
Clear Flexdex boards are formed from Makrolon PC sheet made by Sheffield Plastics Inc. of Sheffield, Mass., an operation of Bayer MaterialScience LLC.
Flexdex offers 12 models in six sizes, with retail prices of $155-$285.
