Look out, because baseball's next Bill Veeck (or George Steinbrenner) could be coming from the largest high density polyethylene pipe extruder. Owning a professional sports team is a dream of many business executives, including Joe Chlapaty of Advanced Drainage Systems Inc., according to this story from the Dubuque, Iowa, Telepraph Herald. According to the report, Chlapaty is interested in bringing minor league baseball back to Dubuque. Chlapaty already owns a small stake in the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
"I grew up in the Chicago area, but I went to (college) in Dubuque and fell in love with the town and the people," he said. "I look at the vibrancy of Dubuque that has occurred over the past 20 years and I think this would be a perfect town for minor league baseball."The story points out that Chlapaty and his wife, Linda, are major donors to the University of Dubuque, including a $22 million donation to build the Chlapaty Recreation and Wellness Center, which is under construction. He obviously loves the city, and I don't blame him. I lived in Dubuque for a while in the early 1980s, and I liked it too.
