Merquinsa Mercados Químicos SL has entered bioresins, with new grades of thermoplastic polyurethanes introduced at K 2007, held Oct. 24-31 in Dusseldorf.
Pearlthane Eco and Pearlbond Eco can be made from a range of renewable resources such as castor oil, but are not biodegradable, Merquinsa President Jose Luis Ayuso said at the show. Patents were filed only three weeks before the event.
``The idea came because of ... our customers - who need a carbon balance material - and because of the need to replace oil-derivative products,'' Ayuso said.
Applications for the new materials include automotive parts such as gear knobs and shock-absorbing layers in running shoes.
In its existing product lines, Barcelona, Spain-based Merquinsa has launched new transparent grades of its aliphatic TPUs for film and injection molded parts.
