Intertek Group plc of London has entered the North American market for polymer testing by acquiring Plastics Technology Laboratories Inc.
Intertek paid $5.4 million for PTLI of Pittsfield, Mass., in a deal announced Nov. 2. PTLI becomes part of Intertek's Oil, Chemical and Agri Division, based in Houston.
PTLI is a major testing company for plastics, elastomers, composites, packaging and film. Among its major customers is cross-town client Sabic Innovative Plastics, the former GE Plastics. PTLI has ISO 17025 laboratory accreditation and has experience in physical, mechanical, thermal, rheological, flammability, analytical, weathering and electrical testing.
Intertek provides a range of quality and safety services around the world. Although PTLI will be Intertek's first plastics testing facility in North America, Intertek already runs large laboratories in Maastricht, Netherlands, and Teeside, England, where polymer and other testing is done. The Teeside operation recently was bought from Imperial Chemical Industries plc, which ran it as ICI Measurement Science Group.
``The acquisition of PTLI enables Intertek to offer expanded and complementary services to our U.S. customers and also internationally,'' said Intertek executive Vice President Mark Loughead in a news release.
``With the strong financial backing of Intertek, there is an opportunity to invest in more capabilities,'' said PTLI General Manager R. James Galipeau.
An Intertek official said there is no plan to close the Pittsfield operation, especially since it is near key customer Sabic IP.
