Total expands in PP, to add PE for pipe
Samsung Total Petrochemicals Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Total SA and Samsung General Chemicals Co. Ltd. in Daesan, South Korea, has added 660 million pounds of polypropylene capacity there. The venture also added about 485 million pounds of annual ethylene feedstock capacity and a similar amount of new capacity for styrene monomer feedstock.
Paris-based Total also recently commercialized a new grade of polyethylene aimed at the market for thick-wall pressure pipes. Pipes made with the new resin are used for water transportation, waste water and similar applications.
Total also recently entered the bioplastics market through a technology agreement with polylactic acid maker Galactic SA of Escanaffles, Belgium. The partnership plans to develop technology for making PLA resin and then will open a 3 million-pound-capacity plant in Escanaffles in 2009.
Kraton adds SBCs, opens tech center
Kraton Polymers LLC has introduced a new grade of its styrenic block copolymers for use in hot-melt adhesive labels. The new material has outstanding adhesive properties and can reduce total systems cost, officials with Houston-based Kraton said.
The firm also recently received Food and Drug Administration approval to use its SBC materials in fatty-food applications.
In Shanghai, Kraton opened a new technical center earlier this year. The center includes distribution capabilities and technical product support for customers in the region.
Lanxess reinforces PBT, softens nylon 6
Lanxess AG has debuted a new grade of highly reinforced Pocan-brand polybutylene terephthalate and a new, softer grade of Durethan-brand nylon 6.
Lanxess - a plastics and chemicals firm based in Leverkusen, Germany - seeks to place the 60 percent glass-filled PBT in hinges, structural components and end shields for car generators. The soft nylon 6 should find a home in air tubes with integrated bellows.
