DÜSSELDORF, GERMANY (Dec. 18, 5:35 p.m. EST) — Samsung Total Petrochemicals Co. Ltd., a joint venture between Total SA and Samsung General Chemicals Co. Ltd. in Daesan, South Korea, has added 660 million pounds of polypropylene capacity there.
The venture also added about 485 million pounds of annual ethylene feedstock capacity and a similar amount of new capacity for styrene monomer feedstock, officials said at K 2007, held Oct. 24-31 in Dusseldorf.
Paris-based Total also recently commercialized a new grade of polyethylene aimed at the market for thick-wall pressure pipes. Pipes made with the new resin are used for water transportation, waste water and similar applications.
In addition, Total recently entered the bioplastics market through a technology agreement with polylactic acid maker Galactic SA of Escanaffles, Belgium. The partnership plans to develop technology for making PLA resin and then will open a 3 million-pound-capacity plant in Escanaffles in 2009.
