Plastics News has bolstered its reporting ranks on two continents, beefed up the business side of its Web operations and promoted one of its marketing staffers.
For its latest editorial hires, the newspaper has reached into the ranks of broadcast journalism for new talent in its Akron headquarters, and rehired someone very familiar halfway around the world.
PN has named Daniel Hockensmith, a news reporter for WKSU-FM, a Kent, Ohio-based National Public Radio station, to assume the packaging and housewares beats previously held by Angie DeRosa. DeRosa resigned in September to pursue a master's degree.
Hockensmith, 36, graduated from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, with a bachelor's degree in mass communication after serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. He began his journalism career as a television assignment editor in Dayton, worked as a TV newscast producer in Cincinnati and then as a reporter/anchor for Clear Channel Radio. In 2001 he moved to the Times Herald daily newspaper in Port Huron, Mich., where he served as a reporter, assistant city editor and columnist.
He then moved to Akron and joined the Rubber City Radio Group as an anchor and reporter before moving in December 2005 to WKSU, where he recorded audio, shot photos, wrote and edited copy, and eventually hosted and produced a nightly radio news program.
Steve Toloken, meanwhile, is rejoining Plastics News as staff reporter and Asia bureau chief, based in Guangzhou, China. After serving for nine years as the newspaper's reporter in Washington, Toloken left PN in January 2006 to move to Hong Kong, from where he contributed regularly as a freelance correspondent. Last year he moved to Guangzhou on the mainland. In his new, full-time post, he will help expand and direct PN's Asia coverage while continuing to contribute regular stories and columns.
Eugene Bukhman, part-time Web coordinator since April, has been named to that position on a full-time basis. Bukhman, a 31-year-old Russian native from Moscow, coordinates posting of advertising on the PlasticsNews.com and PlasticsNews.com/China Web sites. He works directly with advertisers, sales staff and Crain Communications Inc.'s corporate technical staff.
Bukhman now also assumes responsibility for ads on PRW.com, the joint Web site for Croydon, England-based Plastics & Rubber Weekly and European Plastics News, both part of Plastics News Global Group. An 11-year U.S. resident, Bukhman has bachelor's and master's degrees in marketing from Cleveland State University.
Margy Prochaska, who has served as Plastics News' marketing coordinator in charge of project management for the past four years, has been promoted to promotion manager in the Akron office. In her expanded role, Prochaska also will work with graphic designers on layout, production and design of advertising and marketing materials for all PN brands.
