Custom injection molder Stack Plastics Inc. saw an opportunity when the owners of one of its tooling suppliers announced they were about to retire.
Menlo Park-based Stack purchased the equipment from nearby Western Tool & Engineering of Burlingame, Calif., and hired its journeyman mold maker Chris Darek.
``We've had a good business relationship for a number of years, and we had the opportunity to purchase pretty much a complete shop,'' Stack President Mark Rackley said in a Jan. 10 telephone interview.
Stack also added a 2,000-square-foot manufacturing bay to house the tooling equipment, bringing its total space to 10,000 square feet. The company employs 30.
About 85 percent of Stack's business is for the medical industry, and it specializes in small and complex parts.
Now the company will be able to repair and modify molds quickly and improve tool sourcing, though it will continue to work with outside toolmakers, according to Rackley.
