Steven McCracken, 54, former chief executive officer and chairman of Perrysburg, Ohio-based Owens- Illinois Inc., died Feb. 7 in his Toledo home from complications of cancer.
Born in Tacoma, Wash., and raised in Franklin, Ind., McCracken received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.
He had a near-30-year career with DuPont Co. of Wilmington, Del., and was president of DuPont's Invista textile fibers business, which made Lycra and Stainmaster-brand products.
McCracken started at O-I in April 2004, and the firm credits McCracken for its quick turnaround.
In July 2006, O-I announced McCracken would have surgery to remove a small but malignant tumor from his stomach. He stepped down from the company in November 2006 and was succeeded by Albert Stroucken.
McCracken is survived by his wife, Judy, and four children.
