Biosafe Inc. has introduced a permanent antimicrobial that is less costly than conventional silver-based additives.
The new antimicrobial, called Biosafe, protects plastics from staining and degradation caused by bacteria, mold and fungi without migrating out of the plastic, claims the Pittsburgh-based firm. As well, it doesn't cause opacity and eliminates concerns about heavy metals.
The company says adding the Biosafe product to plastic costs 25-50 cents a pound, about a third of what it costs to incorporate typical antimicrobials based on silver ions. It can prolong plastic life while providing a hygenic surface demanded in medical environments.
Biosafe is offered as a powder or in a masterbatch, as well as in the form of treated fillers such as microspheres. The active ingredient has been used to treat textiles but the company has converted it into a powder for easier application in plastics.
