IDI Composites International has a bulk molding compound that achieves a 338° F rating from Underwriters Laboratories Inc., the highest rating for thermoset polyesters.
The rating makes the 46-16-26-S grade well suited to high-temperature environments as in components for power generation and automotive markets. The BMC received Relative Temperature Index ratings for electrical, mechanical-impact and mechanical-strength properties. Tests include a thermal aging process that measures retention of critical properties such as dielectric strength, tensile strength and impact resistance. Prior high-temperature ratings for the thermset polyester composites industry were a maximum of 320° F.
Suggested applications for 46-16-26-S include transformers, power distribution switchgear and circuit breakers, and motor and generator insulation components such as supports and outer casings, according to the Noblesville, Ind., company.
