Taiwan-based electronic component producer Foxconn Group will invest in a third computer products plant in the Czech Republic, and construct a US$50 million production unit in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Also, the firm's Czech subsidiary, Foxconn CZ sro, is buying the Czech operation, in Rudna, of computer and electronic components producer First International Computer Inc. of Tapei, Taiwan.
Foxconn already has plants at Pardubice and Kutna Hora in the country. In February, the official Czech investment development agency, CzechInvest, confirmed that Foxconn - now the country's third largest exporter - was seeking to expand by purchasing an existing electronics operation.
Foxconn CZ, formed in 2000, began with an office in Prague and the Pardubice plant, steadily increasing output. By 2004, output topped 6 million computers.
When it opens early next year, the St. Petersburg plant will turn out assembled desk-top and laptop computer products for Hewlett-Packard. The site will serve the countries of the former Soviet commonwealth, and Europe. Foxconn is part Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd. of Tucheng City.
