Plastics oasis in the desert
Dignitaries examine a scale model of the newly opened Abu Dhabi Polymers Park, unveiled June 10 in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi Basic Industries Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of the Abu Dhabi government's General Holding Corp., backed the project. ADBIC spent $4 billion on the 1.7-square-mile campus, according to a news release. About 50 plastic product manufacturers from around the world will have a conversion capacity of at least 2.2 billion pounds per year. Tenants will convert a wide variety of resins into end products for the packaging, original equipment manufacturing, construction and infrastructure industries. The project is the first of its kind in the UAE and will help diversify the UAE's economy, company officials said.
