Polyvel Inc. has developed a line of pelletized peroxide concentrates for use in cross-linking polyethylene.
The PCL series is free flowing and safer to use than alkyl peroxide powders and liquids, Polyvel claims. For example, it doesn't form bridges in metering equipment as powders sometimes do, allowing for more precise dosing. As well, the concentrates maintain longer shelf life than powders and liquids, according to the Hammonton, N.J., company.
Loadings from 1-40 percent are available in a variety of carriers.
The concentrates can be let down in extrusion, injection and blow molding and rotational molding. Cross-linking leads to greater melt strength and higher mechanical values such as tensile, flexural and impact strength. Alternatively, part weight can be reduced while maintaining strength, the company suggests.
